Link in bio on Instagram
No platform shapes the phrase quite like Instagram: because posts there can't carry clickable links, “link in bio” sits under every other caption. This page covers both sides — where to find that link as a visitor, and how to add your own as a creator.
In short
You'll find the link in the bio in the Instagram profile: open the profile, and below the name and the short description text the link appears in a highlighted colour. Tapping it opens the page. In posts and comments, links on Instagram aren't clickable — hence the constant “link in bio.”
Where do I find the link in the bio?
The link lives in the person's profile, not on the post. Here's how to get there:
- 1Tap the profile name above the post, or the profile picture.
- 2You land on the profile. At the top sit the name, profile picture and the short bio text.
- 3Directly below the bio text is the link — shown in a highlighted colour, so it stands out from the rest of the text.
- 4Tap it. If several links are stored, a short list opens first so you can choose.
If you don't see a link in the profile
Not every profile has one. The bio link is optional — plenty of private accounts simply don't add one. In that case there's nothing there to find.
If a post refers to a giveaway or a time-limited campaign, the link may also have been swapped out long ago. Another possibility: the note referred to a story with a link sticker, which disappears after 24 hours unless it was saved as a highlight.
Why aren't links in Instagram posts clickable?
Instagram deliberately doesn't turn addresses in captions and comments into links. You can type them out, but they stay plain text — tapping does nothing, and hardly anyone retypes them.
That's a platform decision, not a setting you could change. The profile link — and the link sticker in stories — remain the only places where a tap actually does something. That's where the “link in bio” formula comes from.
Adding your own link to your Instagram bio
For your own profile it goes like this:
- 1Open your profile and tap “Edit profile.”
- 2Select the links section.
- 3Tap “Add external link” and enter your address.
- 4Optionally give it a display title — it's shown instead of the bare URL and gets noticeably more clicks than a cryptic address.
- 5Save. The link appears below your bio text right away.
Instagram allows several links — isn't that enough?
Since 2023 you can store up to five links in your Instagram profile. For many people that genuinely is enough, and a page of your own isn't strictly necessary.
There are reasons for one anyway: five slots fill up fast once a shop, a newsletter, several platforms and a running collaboration all need a place. More importantly, Instagram doesn't show you which link was clicked how often — your own page does. And you need the same collection for TikTok, YouTube or your email signature regardless; with a page of your own you maintain it once instead of five times.
Then there's presentation: on your own page you control the order, the labels and the look, instead of settling for a plain list.
How to create your own pageLinks in stories: the link sticker
Stories additionally offer the link sticker. You add it from the sticker picker while creating the story and enter your address — viewers tap it directly. Since 2021 it's open to all accounts, regardless of follower count.
The catch: the story disappears after 24 hours, and the link with it. To keep it permanently reachable, save the story as a highlight — or point to the link in your bio after all.
Does this apply to TikTok, YouTube and Threads too?
In principle yes, in the details no. TikTok allows a website link in the profile, though only from a certain account type upwards. YouTube shows links in the channel banner and the channel description. Threads takes the link from the connected Instagram profile.
The common thread: one slot everywhere, and everywhere the same question of where it should point. That's exactly why many people set up a single landing page and use its URL everywhere — when something changes, they change only the page.
Frequently asked questions
- Where do I find the link in the bio on Instagram?
- Open the person's profile by tapping the profile name above the post or the profile picture. Directly below the name and the short bio text sits the link, shown in a highlighted colour. Tapping it opens the page. If several links are stored, a selection list appears first.
- What does “link in bio” mean on Instagram?
- It's a set of directions: whatever the post mentions is reachable via the link in the sender's profile. The note exists because Instagram doesn't make links in captions and comments clickable — the profile link is the only place where a tap does anything.
- Why isn't the link in the post clickable?
- Instagram never turns addresses in captions and comments into links; they stay plain text. That's a platform rule and can't be changed in the settings — hence the pointer to the profile link.
- How many links does Instagram allow in the bio?
- Since 2023, up to five links can be stored in the profile. They appear below the bio text; from the second link onwards, tapping opens a selection list first.
- I don't see a link in the profile at all — why?
- The bio link is optional and many accounts don't add one. It's also possible the post referred to a story with a link sticker — that disappears after 24 hours unless it was saved as a highlight.
- Can I put a link in stories?
- Yes, via the link sticker while creating the story. It has been open to all accounts since 2021, regardless of follower count. After 24 hours the story and its link are gone — unless you save it as a highlight.
- Do I need a link-in-bio page if Instagram allows five links?
- Not necessarily. Your own page is worth it if five slots are too few, if you want to see which link gets clicked how often, or if you need the same collection of links on TikTok, YouTube and in your email signature — then you maintain it in one place instead of five.
